August 9 & 10 (Sat-Sun) Nesika Work Trip
We had an exceptionally eager group at Nesika for the June work trip. We can now see the lodge and the women's dorm from much of the tractor trail, and the trail itself has been groomed. We have almost finished the lower half of this year's wall project on the women's dorm. This month we will want to chip the debris from the clearing project, continue our wall reconstruction on the dorm and get some more improvements made to the road and the tractor trail. We have plenty of tasks light and heavy to accomplish. Come up to Nesika, make a contribution, and have some fun.

August 16 (Sat)Paradise Park, Hike & Dine - A or C
Hike change due to snow, contact leader for more info
Too much snow up in part of Paradise Park to do entire loop-safely, so instead, I'll offer two options to choose from:
We can do Lookout Mountain for 6 miles/1,800 foot gain, which includes a side spur down to Oval Lake and return.
After this relatively short hike, those who wish to can either return to PDX or go early to hike' n' dine at the lodge.
OR
For the hardy among you, we will then take the 40 minute drive back and on up to Timberline Lodge. Here we'll go into Paradise park from the trailhead at the lodge parking lot. From this start, it's possible to go up to 3 miles along the Paradise Park trail, before the going gets dicey. We hike in as far as the group wants, before turn around to return (probably somewhere between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours, then return (up to about 6 miles R.T.)
NOTE: if you want to do the "dine" (super home cooked meal) at the lodge you must reserved with Bernice by Wed. Aug 13!
Carpooling will be arranged according to these choices. Call leader for options

Fourth Generation Trails Club Members
We have been visited at Nesika this year by some fourth-generation participants. Jordyn, James, Damen, and Blake Conrad, ages 3 ,5, 7, and 9, attended the April work trip (and helped fill the woodshed), and the Memorial Day event. They are the children of David and Brigitte Conrad, grandkids of Glen and Linda Conrad, and great-grandkids of Bernice Schuchardt.
From Trail Blazer, August 1936
Probably the biggest event any Trails Club member will see on his calendar is the Fifth Annual Convention of the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs on September 5, 6, and 7 at Nesika. During those three days the Club will be host to representatives from twenty-six different organizations. From ten cities in Washington, six in California, four in Oregon, and one in Montana, they will gather for exchange of ideas, furthering the cause of outdoor clubs and cementing of friendships. It is planned to leave Portland in a caravan the afternoon of September 5 and approach the Lodge by way of Palmer Road. Mr. Waha, Supervisor of Mt. Hood National Forest, has ordered that all bad spots in the road be graveled. Everything is being done to make the affair a success. Your part will be outlined in a letter from the Convention Committee.
A great deal of work on the new dorm was completed at the work trip August 2. Pop, Ed Neubauer, Ken Martin, and "Heinie" Wetterborg installed a new thousand-pound generator, strung wires to the dorm, and almost completed the installation of the lighting system. Ding and Alex added a large amount of flooring to that already laid, Agnes and Herman finished twenty-two bunks and set some of them up. Charlie worked on the porch-railing and a gallant crew of girls carried and piled lumber, swept floors, drove nails, sang lustily and had a grand time withal.
There is still plumbing, flooring, wiring, construction, and cleaning to be done before receiving our guests at Nesika and it will be appreciated if any member who can possibly do so will attend one of the work trips August 23 and 30.
Independence Day Kayak
It was a three day weekend in July, with an email for an impromptu kayak trip on Saturday to Smith and Bybee Lakes, 9 members and one guest put in at about 10:30AM. The lakes have lots of shrubs along its banks and in the water, a variety of algae and grasses to paddle through, however....no motorboats or jetskis on this lovely lake. It was a beautiful 3 hour paddle with views of dark clouds reflecting on the mirror flat waters, the colorful kayaks and its occupants was like eye candy. Numerous blue herons, lots of water fowl, one huge beaver den were some of the highlights. The only noise we heard was a distant occasional engine roar from PIR, where those who like car racing did not know that just a few miles away is this pristine sanctuary. Organization by email to groups of Trail Clubbers (We have a TCO Yahoo Group for members)works well.....try it!
Red Buttes Backpack
July 6-11, 2008
The planned trip to the Trinity Alps was impossible due to multiple forest fires. The back up trip to the Strawberries wouldn't work due to snow. Therefore 3 guests and one member headed off to "the best kept secret in Oregon". The 6 by 13 mile Red Butte Wilderness is mostly in California but is accessed from the Oregon side. We hiked a 29 mile loop in pristine old growth forest and on the rugged Siskiyou Crest seeing only one party of three other backpackers and a total of 3 day hikers in 6 days.
We swam at Azalea Lake with the scent of Mountain Azaleas and at Echo Lake which had a wonderful view of red cliffs. The snow had just melted out and there was an extraordinary variety of flowers including many unknown in the Cascades. The forest included many unusual conifers as well as Oak and Madrone. We could see the huge plumes of smoke from the Happy Camp fire in California but no smoke reached us and visibility from the ridge was perfect. The trail maintenance is mostly nonexistent and at times we climbed around or over trees or we pushed our way through shrubbery.
Strawberry Mountain-Lookout Mountain Outing
July 24-29
Due to deep, lingering snow in Montana's mountains, the Lake Plateau Backpack morphed into the Strawberry Mountain-Lookout Mountain outing in eastern Oregon. Six TCO members drove to Strawberry Campground on the edge of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and hiked to the panoramic summit of Strawberry Mountain (9,038 ft.) The hike was 12.6 miles with 3,320 feet of elevation gain with only one small stretch of snow lingering across the trail. We passed Strawberry Lake and Strawberry Falls and then climbed through wildflower meadows to the summit where hundreds of butterflies were "hill topping." The next day we hiked to Slide Lake and Little Slide Lake, traversing more wildflower meadows for 9 miles and 1,500 feet of gain. Sadly, smoke from the California wildfires obscured the view. We then broke camp and moved on, stopping at the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds before settling in at Ochoco Campground. From here, it was a short drive to the Lookout Mountain trailhead, where we hiked a 7-mile loop with 1,220 feet elevation gain. The trail climbed gradually through forest to the vast summit mesa where we walked through miles of wildflower meadows to the summit's cliff edge (6,926 ft.) and a view of the high Cascades from Mount Adams to Mount Bachelor. Again, smoke blowing up from the south gradually obscured the view. The return trail passed a shelter for Nordic skiers and descended past derelict ruins of the Independent Mine, including a 3-story building and a collapsed mine shaft with ore cart rails, where cinnabar ore was mined and processed into mercury.
