All visitors and Trails Club members are encouraged to enjoy the great Northwest outdoors by selecting a hike, bike ride or other event from this calendar. Gentle Reminders provides explanation of hike difficulty and hike guideline. Detail description of common meeting is available at Meeting Places.

Week-1

May 3 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch at a nearby cafe.
We will meet at Hoyt Arboretum visitors center, 4000 SW Fairview Blvd. Parking is free on the street in front of the visitors center, but the two lots cost. We will hike through the arboretum and have lunch at the Cascade Grill just inside the Oregon Zoo gate. No zoo entry fee required.

May 3 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class B

We will hike from 6 PM until 8 PM-ish in Forest Park and the West Hills. Please carry a flashlight or headlamp and dress for changeable weather. Parking is limited; arrive early to find a spot, sign and pay the hike fee.
Cost: $1 for Trails Club and Mazama members; $2 non-members.
Meet: at Wallace Park between NW 25th and 26th on Raleigh. We leave at 6 PM sharp!
Class A: Approximately 4-5 miles with less than 500 foot elevation gain.

May 4 (Thu) Bike and Dine – SW Portland to North Portland - Class A

Please join me for an easy ride and lunch! We'll start in SW Portland, cross the Tillikum Bridge to the eastside, ride up to North Mississippi Ave to have lunch at Por Que No. We’ll then ride back on the west side. About 14 or so miles round trip, bike path and bike lane on N. Williams. Please bring a lock to lock your bike at Por Que No. I don’t ride in the rain, so check with me that morning if the weather seems iffy.
Depart: 10 AM corner of SW Virginia and SW Nebraska. Parking can be challenging, please arrive early enough to find a space—then you can ride to meeting place. This is near Fulton Pub if you need an address.

May 6 (Sat) Annual President’s Hike – Class B

May 6-7 (Sat-Sun) Nesika open - host only

I'll be holding a host-only weekend at Nesika on May 6-7 for TCO members and friends. This is meant to be a low-key weekend where people bring their own food and stay over Saturday night. Please bring food to share for a potluck dinner Saturday evening. I'll be scheduling 2-3 times to open the Larch Mountain gate on Saturday morning to let people in.

May 7 (Sun) - Blue Lake Park Bike Ride - Class B

This ride starts at Gateway and soon gets onto bike paths - I205 path, Springwater Corridor, and Gresham-Fairview Trail before using city streets to go to Blue Lake Park, where we stop for lunch. We then continue along Marine Drive (road and path) to NE 33rd, from which we return through city streets to the start. The ride is 35 miles with 850 ft of ascent. For those wishing a shorter ride, there is the option to just come back from I205 and Marine Drive along the I205 bike path to the start, which cuts 10 miles and 350 ft ascent off the route.

May 10 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch at a nearby cafe.
We are starting our hike this week at Gabriel Park, in the parking lot directly east of the intersection of SW 45th and SW Nevada. Head south on 45th from Vermont and turn left on SW Nevada to find the parking lot. Please arrive ready to depart promptly at 9:30 AM. Hike is 5 miles through three SW parks.

May 13 (Sat) Inter-state Bridges Ride - Class B

We will ride a 28 mile loop from James Gleason Boat Ramp on Marine Drive over the I5 bridge through downtown Vancouver (possible stop at Vancouver Saturday market), up Fruit Valley Road to Burnt Bridge Creek Trail. We will ride BBC Trail to 92nd Ave. and then to I205 for our return to James Gleason Boat Ramp. Some of the ride will be on multi-use paths and some on roads. Bring snacks and water.

May 17 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch at a nearby cafe.
This week's hike will begin at Friendly House at NW Thurman and 26th.
We will be walking some of the back paths of Washington Park, past the deserted Hobbit Town Hall and a few fancy houses.

May 18 (Thur) Fern Hill Bike Ride - class A/B

This is an easy ride from Hillsboro to Forest Grove following part of the Tualatin Valley Scenic Bike Way. Ride from Rood Bridge Park to Fern Hill Wetlands for lunch and a short stroll through the wetland, then return. The route is about 22 miles on back country roads.

May 19-21 (Fri-Sun) Nesika Work Trip

We were able to clear the road on April 9th all the way into the lodge. Now time for the work. We have many projects we can start. Be prepared for digging, wood hauling, painting, cleaning, roofing. Let me know what you would like to work on and I will have supplies. Meet at the upper gate at 9:00 AM Saturday.

May 20 (Sat) Sandy River Exploration Bike - Class C

Join me for a ride that follows the Sandy River from its mouth to Dodge Park, and crosses it twice. We will start at Lewis & Clark State Park near Troutdale, head south on the Historic Columbia River Highway for a few miles before crossing the river on the Stark Street Bridge, ride up and down the hills and dales and across the farmland above the river, then cross the river once more at Dodge Park, where we turn around. Total distance is approximately 30 miles, with cumulative elevation gain about 1,800 feet. Be prepared for some short but steep hills. Optional lunch in Troutdale after the ride.
Meet: 9 AM at Lewis & Clark State Park near Troutdale, Exit 18 from I-84. Go south after exiting freeway; the parking lot is just past the railroad underpass on the left. No parking fee.

May 21 (Sun) Covered Bridges- Class C, distance and hills

Tour the Scio Or. area and visit 5 historic covered bridges. This ride is through the beautiful rolling hills and farmland around Scio Oregon. Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water. There are no restaurants along the route and water and restrooms are limited. There are ports-potties at the park in Scio. Ride Distance : 47 miles, Elevation gain : 1360 ft. Driving Distance: 140 mi round trip, 1.5 hrs each way.

May 24 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

Week-5

May 30 (Tue) Mosier Tunnels Bicycle Ride, Class A and B

The dedicated bike path begins just east of Hood River. The first 8 miles are an easy ride for beginners. After we reach the town of Mosier, we will ride on Highway 30 to Rowena Crest, enjoying the scenery and a few hills. Bring water, lunch, a spare inner tube and the ten essentials. Helmets are required on TCO bike rides.
Fee: $1 for TCO members, $2 non members.
Class A: 8 miles. Those preferring a shorter ride will ride with the group through the tunnels, then return to the trailhead on their own.
Class B: 25 miles.
Meet: 10 AM Mark Hatfield West trailhead ($5 parking fee or NW Forest pass required).

May 31 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch at a nearby cafe.
This week we will hike to Council Crest park. Please meet at the intersection of SW Spring and SW 18th, ready to depart at 9:30 AM. There are no restrooms at the beginning of the hike, and none until more than halfway through. There are restrooms at the bottom of the hill at Vista and Burnside. If you need an address, 2440 SW Vista Ave, Portland, OR 97201 is a block from the start of the hike.
