March 21st – 23rd: Deschutes River backpack: Macks Canyon to Mouth of Deschutes
24 mile hike from Macks Canyon to Mouth of Deschutes. We will Meet at Pendelton Woolen Mills in Washougal. Goal is as few cars as possible to save shuttle fees. We will then drive to Macks Canyon where we will have a shuttle driver pick up cars and take them to Mouth of river. cost is approximately $125. Day one we hike from Macks Canyon 6 miles down river. The first day we go in and out of 7 train culverts. Day 2 we hike on down to mile 8. There is a nice hike to the top of the ridge if anyone is interested. There is also a bathroom here. Day 3 we hike out. There is the option of a high trail if anyone is interested. Very beautiful in the spring. You will see mountain sheep, deer, sometimes a bear, river otters, raccoons, possible snakes.
You will need good boots, tent, sleeping bag, stove, food for 2 dinners, two lunches and two breakfasts. You will need a water filter. Be prepared for temperatures ranging from 78 degrees Fahrenheit to freezing. Layer clothes. Have rain gear, sun hat. This is a great spring hike. it is usually sunny and pleasant.
